The Hornby Island Housing Society has been dedicated for over 25 years to building and managing safe, comfortable, and affordable housing for Hornby Island residents of moderate income. We also work with branches of government, foundations, and other non-profits to advocate for and promote the importance of affordable housing. We recognize the challenges to Hornby Islanders, both families and individuals, to find good quality housing that is year-around and affordable. Rising property values and increased demand for vacation homes are factors that strain Hornby’s ability to adequately house its year-around island population and maintain a diverse social fabric.

We believe that everyone deserves to have a home that is both safe and secure and is well maintained. This is what we are striving to offer to the young families and many individuals who may have good employment on Hornby, but are still not able to obtain secure housing.  Growing numbers of seniors on Hornby are faced with possibly having to move off island if they cannot find appropriate housing that enables them to stay. Affordable housing is a critical issue on Hornby Island, and Hornby Island Housing Society is working to address it.

Workforce housing is a critical need on Hornby Island, as it is on most of the Gulf Islands. We have a dedicated and skilled group of people on Hornby who keep our services running, from Home Support workers, nurses, librarians, school and pre-school teachers, carpenters, retail workers, artists and musicians, First Responders and fire fighters, the list could go on and on. Unfortunately, it is difficult these days for young families and working people to compete with the rising prices resulting from recreational demand for land and homes on Hornby. But non-profit rental can fill the affordability gap and allow families and individuals to find comfortable and attractive homes, where they can enjoy the security of knowing that rents will remain reasonable and that their homes will not be pulled out of the rental pool and put on the market for sale.
